Moran seedling 04NRlse01 shows no aril characteristics
even though 1/4 bred. Not eligible for arilbred registration.
‘Elvan Almost’ (Anita Moran 2010, IB)
as an IB, it could surely be classed as an Aril-med.
In Mr. Waters’s story, he asks about what
happened with Arilbreds with unknown parentage
and complained about complicated parentages.
Both issues are simple to address. A seedling on
average can take seven years from planting to
market. In that time, most hybridizers take extensive
notes on the growth habits, fertility and appearance
of the seedling. With most unknown parentages, how
the seedling manifests can answer how it should be
registered. As for the complicated parentage, bring
it on. Those situations can produce strange and
unusual seedlings. Investigating the background is
a wonderful winter pastime that I and many others
Moran seedling 04NRlse04 sibling to 04NRlse01 a 1/4 bred shows more
than two aril characteristics and is elegable for arilbred registration.
‘Vlad’s Daughter’ (Anita Moran 2010, AB OGB-)
enjoy, especially if we get a seedling that
looks nothing like its siblings.
In my opinion the Aril and Arilbred classifications
do not need to be changed. They are challenging
just like the irises they represent. The Aril classes
of irises are beautiful, unique, and worth any effort
to grow them. I recommend that everyone join the
Aril Society International today for one year. Buy
from the member-only plant sale that occurs in the
summer. If you’re worried, try some quarterbreds,
denoted by RB-, OB- or OGB-, and allow these
wonderful irises to steal your heart and they have
stolen mine.
