JANE MILLIMAN, NEW YORK Editor’s Message
As I write this, we in the
Northeast are in one of the
longest cold spells most of
us can remember. I get it…
it’s winter…it’s cold. But this
winter seems extreme, even
for snowy upstate New York.
Our little (or in some cases,
beefy) rhizomes are snug in
their lairs, though, and spring
will arrive—it always does.
With spring comes Convention, and this year’s is
special! The New Orleans gardens slated for tours
look amazing, and I want to give an extra special
thank you to Jaime Cloud for allowing us to reprint a
series of convention tour sites from Fleur de Lis: The
Journal of the Society for Louisiana Irises, of which
she is editor. Thanks to Jim Morris, too, for pointing
the articles out to me.
One of the more trying aspects of putting
together IRISES is finding print-quality images to run
in these pages. We have high standards, and we don’t
want to run sub-par photographs. But a lot of times,
people—through no fault of their own—have no idea
what that means. If it looks good on a website, it will
look good in print, yes? No.
I won’t get into the details here, because Neil
Houghton, on page 34, explains everything
you need to know about submitting images when
registering new irises. The implementation of those
guidelines will result in an image bank we can rely
on. Even if you aren’t a hybridizer, if you enjoy
photography and would like to have your work
published in IRISES, the new rules will help you, too.
And me!
Have a wonderful winter.
