100th Anniversary Convention
INTERNATIONAL IRIS COMPETITION REQUEST FOR IRISES
The American Iris Society will host the AIS 100th
Anniversary National Convention May 18–23, 2020. The
AIS will also host an International Iris Competition for
Tall Bearded Iris at Presby Memorial Iris Garden during
Convention week, co-chaired by Jill Bonino and Kathy
Chilton. As Presby is already planted with massive displays
of historic as well as award-winning iris, there will be
limited space to plant competition irises. Please observe
the following guidelines when sending guest irises. Each
competition iris variety will be judged under a designated
number. Variety names will be disclosed after the judging is
completed.
Hybridizers of Tall Bearded varieties are invited to send
rhizomes of recent introductions and seedlings under
consideration for introduction. Up to two rhizomes of up to
five varieties per hybridizer will be accepted from July 1 to
15, 2018.
Planting will be done in mid-July, so rhizomes will be
planted promptly after receipt. Please send the best of the
best!

The package should be clearly marked “AIS COMPETITION IRIS.” The name of the variety or seedling (and/or
seedling number) should be clearly marked on each rhizome. On a separate packing list, please include:
1. Hybridizer’s name, address, phone number, AND EMAIL
2. Name or seedling number of the variety
3. Height, color, and distinguishing characteristics (space age? rebloomer?)
4. Year of Introduction (if applicable)
Contributors who do not include an email address will receive a confirmation of receipt by regular mail.
If a guest seedling is later named, it is the responsibility of the hybridizer to notify the Guest Iris Chair of the
change. Please send updates to Jill Bonino at jillbiris62@gmail.com.
No rhizomes will be offered for sale on the Internet
or by any other means that competes with sales by the
contributor.
Due to the difficulties and expense of shipping
overseas, and the lack of volunteer staff to label iris and
prepare shipments, no competition iris will be returned to
the contributors. All unnamed seedlings will be destroyed.
The 2020 Convention Committee and the owners
of the host garden will strictly adhere to the Code of
Ethics as printed in the AIS Convention Handbook. The
Convention Committee and host garden will not be
responsible for losses beyond their control.
If you have any questions about the above criteria and/
or the International Iris Competition, please email either
Jill Bonino at jillbiris62@gmail.com or Kathy Chilton at
chiltonkathryn@gmail.com.
